Meet Our Office Staff
Winston Petrey
Owner/Interim Install Manager
Originally from Boone, NC, Winston established Mountaineer Heating & Cooling in 1981 after attending Watauga High School, Mercer University and Appalachian State University. He recognizes and adapts to the ever-evolving landscape of the HVAC industry and maintains Mountaineer Heating & Cooling as a HVAC leader in the High Country. He takes pride in overseeing a company that continues to grow with the community and provides an essential service with the utmost integrity. Winston is a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, enjoys spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and in his free time is a skilled fisherman. He lives in Boone with his wife Karen.
Bob Johnson
Shop Foreman and Metal Fabricator
Bob Johnson works in our Installation Department as our Shop Foreman. If it can be made out of sheet metal, Bob can make it. He’s been a part of our team since 1994 and brings a level of pride and craftsmanship to our work that is rare these days. You may also find Bob pre-planning one of our many jobs before the work is actually completed. Bob lives in Sugar Grove with his wife Vicky. They have two grown children.
Kayla Greene
Administrative Coordinator
Kayla is a Watauga County native who spent her childhood on a farm in Bethel, NC. She enjoys photography, music, and hiking with her children in her spare time.
Drew Petrey
Service Manager
Drew Petrey, from Boone, NC, grew up in the heating and air industry. He joined his father full time with Mountaineer Heating & Cooling as a Service Technician in 2003 after several ventures as an entrepreneur. He spent time in the Sales Division before heading the service department in 2010. He assumed the General Manager position in 2015. Drew holds many industry certifications and maintains a State of North Carolina H3 Class 1 HVAC License. He enjoys the challenges of the industry and finds great satisfaction in seeing projects completed with excellence. Drew is a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Boone where he serves in the children’s and music ministry. He enjoys spending time with his family, reading, playing guitar, and is a true sportsman enjoying many outdoor activities. Drew lives in Boone with his wife Fran, and children Evie, Mary Fran, Ward, Cade & Benjamin.
Dave James
Sales Manager
Dave James, from Sugar Grove, joined Mountaineer Heating & Cooling in 2011 and has over 25 years of experience in sales, marketing and business development. He is a local graduate of Watauga High School and Appalachian State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He works with home and business owners daily, providing education on the latest innovations in the HVAC industry and enjoys helping customers find the best solution for their unique projects. He is also the resident expert in home assessments and has extensive training in load calculation and system design. Dave is an avid sports fan and member of the ASU Yosef Club as well as several recreational leagues. He also enjoys reading, traveling, golf, DIY projects, cooking (especially grilling) and what friends have described as a “tailgating culinary adventure.” He lives in Blowing Rock with his fiancé, Jessica, their schnauzer, Jetson, and they are expecting an addition to their family in 2021.
Joshua Jones, MSW
Office Operations Manager and Controller
After spending over 8 years in the healthcare field and serving over 11 years at Alliance Bible Fellowship, Joshua Jones found a deep joy in all things administrative. In 2020 he received his master’s in social work with a concentration in communities, organizations, and non-profit leadership. He joined the business operations side of Mountaineer Heating & Cooling in 2021 where he is now using his administrative skills and heart for teams and people to run our office operations in addition to being our controller. He lives in Watauga with his wife, Molly, and their daughter Hazel.

Sean Frindethie
Service Technician
Started his HVAC career with us in 2020, but had to relocate temporarily. He continued to work in HVAC and relocated back here and joined our team again in 2023
