Before calling for AC repair, spend 10 minutes checking your thermostat, air filter, breaker, vents, outdoor unit, and drain line. These simple steps can sometimes solve a minor cooling issue without a service visit. Even when they do not restore your air conditioning, they give your HVAC technician helpful information that can speed up diagnosis. 1. Check the Thermostat Settings
Start with the simplest possibility. Make sure the thermostat is set to Cool, not Heat, Fan, or Off. Set the temperature at least three to five degrees below the current indoor temperature.
Next, confirm that the thermostat display is working. A blank screen may point to dead batteries, a tripped breaker, a drainage safety switch, or another power issue.
If your thermostat uses batteries, replace them with fresh ones. Then wait a few minutes. Many air conditioning systems include a built-in delay before restarting, so do not repeatedly adjust the temperature while waiting.

2. Replace or Inspect the Air Filter
A dirty filter is one of the most common causes of weak airflow, long cooling cycles, higher utility bills, and frozen evaporator coils.
Remove the filter and hold it toward a light source. If very little light passes through, it is probably ready to be replaced. Make sure the new filter matches the correct dimensions and that the airflow arrow points toward the HVAC equipment.
A thicker or higher-rated filter is not always better. Some systems struggle to pull air through overly restrictive filters. Use the filter type recommended for your equipment unless an HVAC professional has approved another option.
3. Check the Circuit Breakers
Your air conditioning system may use more than one breaker. One often powers the indoor air handler or furnace, while another powers the outdoor condenser.
Look for breakers labeled AC, condenser, air handler, heat pump, furnace, or HVAC. A tripped breaker may sit between the On and Off positions.
To reset it, move the breaker fully to Off and then back to On. Only do this once. If it trips again, leave it off and call for AC repair. Repeatedly resetting a breaker can create a safety risk and may cause further damage.
4. Confirm the Vents Are Open
Walk through the home and check the supply vents. Furniture, rugs, curtains, boxes, and pet beds can block airflow without anyone noticing.
Keep vents open, including those in rooms you do not use often. Closing too many supply vents can increase pressure inside the duct system and make the HVAC equipment work harder.
Also check the larger return-air grilles. These need open space to pull air back into the system. Dust buildup on a return grille is another clue that the filter or ductwork may need attention.
5. Look at the Outdoor AC Unit
Head outside and inspect the condenser from a safe distance. The unit needs room to release heat.
Clear away leaves, grass clippings, weeds, sticks, and other loose debris. Try to maintain about two feet of open space around the sides of the equipment. Do not open the cabinet or reach through the grille.
Check whether the fan is spinning while the thermostat is calling for cooling. Listen for humming, buzzing, rattling, or clicking. Those details can help a technician narrow down the cause.
Do not spray electrical components or attempt to straighten internal parts yourself. A gentle rinse of the exterior coil may be appropriate for some systems, but professional cleaning is safer when buildup is heavy.
6. Look for Ice on the Refrigerant Lines
Check the insulated copper line near the outdoor equipment and any visible lines near the indoor unit. Frost or ice is not normal.
A frozen AC system may result from restricted airflow, a dirty filter, a blower problem, dirty coils, or low refrigerant. Running it while frozen can make the problem worse.
Turn the cooling mode off and set the thermostat fan to On to help the ice thaw. Do not chip or scrape the ice. Thawing may take several hours, and the underlying cause should still be inspected before normal operation resumes.
7. Check the Drain Area for Water
Air conditioners remove moisture from the air, and that water normally drains away through a condensate line. A clogged drain can trigger a safety switch that shuts down the system.
Look around the indoor equipment for standing water, damp flooring, overflowing drain pans, or staining. If water is near electrical components, turn the system off and call for service.
Some homeowners can safely clear a simple drain outlet, but persistent clogs may involve algae, debris, poor drainage slope, or a failing condensate pump.
8. Notice What the System Is Actually Doing
Before calling, spend one minute observing the system. Is air coming from the vents? Is it warm, slightly cool, or fully cold? Is the indoor unit running while the outdoor unit remains off?
Write down anything unusual:
- The thermostat temperature and setting
- Any sounds, odors, water, frost, or ice
- Which parts of the system appear to be running
- When the cooling problem began
- Any recent power outage or electrical work
- Whether the air filter was recently changed
