Summer Cooling Tips

  • If you don’t have a programmable thermostat, then you should consider buying one. This way, when you are out of the house, or on vacation you can set your thermostat to a much higher temperature; therefore saving you money.
  • Close off any ducts to unused room and areas, and insulate rooms like the garage, attic or cellar.
  • It may be time for an HVAC upgrade. Get a licensed pro to inspect your system. Look for models that have the EPA’s Energy Star and replace filters often.
  • Turn off lights when not in use. Switch incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent ones.
  • Make sure your fan is spinning clockwise.  Turn your ceiling fan off when you exit the room.
  • Regular maintenance will help ensure that your air conditioner system operates efficiently throughout the summer. Check the filter often by holding it up to a bright light. If you can’t see through it, it’s time to clean or replace the filter.
  • Depending on the square footage of your home, you can save on your air conditioning / cooling costs for every degree you raise your thermostat in the summer.
  • To stay comfortable during the hottest hours of the day, do your cooking and laundry in the early morning or late evenings. These activities increase the level of humidity in your home, making it less comfortable and forcing the air conditioner to work even harder.
